The way people shop online is changing. Instead of typing a keyword into Google and clicking through product pages, a growing number of shoppers are asking AI assistants like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Gemini to do the browsing for them. They describe what they want, the AI finds options, and in some cases they can buy without ever leaving the conversation.
This is agentic commerce. And Shopify has just made it official.
With the launch of Agentic Storefronts in Shopify’s Winter ’26 Edition (December 2025), and the rollout of the Knowledge Base app, every merchant on the platform now has the tools to show up in these AI-powered conversations – accurately, on-brand, and with Shopify’s checkout infrastructure handling the transaction.
The numbers are already compelling. Since January 2025, AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores has grown eight times year-over-year, while orders originating from AI-powered searches have increased fifteen times. This is not a future trend – it is happening right now.
What Is Agentic Commerce?
Agentic commerce is an ecommerce model where AI agents handle the entire shopping journey on a customer’s behalf – discovering products, comparing options, and completing purchases autonomously. McKinsey estimates the global agentic commerce opportunity could reach $3 to $5 trillion by 2030.
For merchants, the implication is straightforward: if your products are not discoverable by AI agents, you will not exist in this channel. Shopify’s response to this challenge is a suite of native tools that abstract away the complexity of connecting to multiple AI platforms.

What Shopify Has Launched
1. Agentic Storefronts
Agentic Storefronts is a new sales channel built directly into your Shopify admin. Set it up once and your products are syndicated to AI shopping platforms automatically – no separate integrations, no bespoke builds.
Currently supported platforms include:
- ChatGPT – product discovery; buyers complete purchase on your storefront via an in-app browser
- Microsoft Copilot – embedded checkout; buyers can purchase without leaving the AI interface
- Google AI Mode and Gemini – direct checkout available for eligible US merchants
- Perplexity – product discovery and referral
Shopify Catalog powers the underlying data engine. It infers product categories, extracts attributes, consolidates variants, and clusters identical items so that AI agents surface clean, relevant results. Prices and inventory are kept current across every connected platform, and every sale is attributed back to its originating AI channel in your admin.
Merchants can toggle individual AI platforms on or off, and choose whether buyers complete checkout directly within the AI interface (where available) or are directed to the storefront. You can manage this under Settings > Sales Channels > Agentic Storefronts in your Shopify admin.
2. The Knowledge Base App
Agentic Storefronts solve the discovery problem. The Knowledge Base app solves the accuracy problem.
When a shopper asks an AI agent about your return policy, shipping times, or whether a product is suitable for a specific use case, the AI will attempt to answer. Without a structured source of truth, it will guess – drawing from your About page, FAQ section, or whatever it can scrape. Those answers can be incomplete, outdated, or simply wrong.
The Knowledge Base app gives you direct control. Upload your verified answers and the AI agents connected to your store use that information instead of guessing. You can also:
- Review Shopify-generated FAQs about your store and edit them for accuracy
- Monitor what questions buyers are actually asking AI agents about your brand
- Define your brand voice so that AI responses align with how you want to communicate
- Track which topics are generating questions, giving you valuable insight into customer intent
The app is free to install and available to all Shopify merchants.
Why This Matters for Your Business Now
AI-powered product discovery is not a niche behaviour. According to Shopify’s 2025 Global Holiday Report, 64% of shoppers said they were likely to use AI to some extent when making purchases – rising to 84% among 18 to 24 year olds. These are buyers who are describing what they want in natural language and expecting AI to find the right match.
There is also a timing advantage. AI browsing behaviour is still forming. Early-mover merchants who get their product data structured correctly, their Knowledge Base populated, and their Agentic Storefronts configured will benefit from a period where competition on these channels is lower than it will ever be again.
It is also worth noting what Shopify has handled for you. Building individual integrations with ChatGPT, Copilot, and Google’s AI surfaces independently would require significant development resource. Shopify’s infrastructure – Shopify Catalog, the Universal Commerce Protocol co-developed with Google, and the Agentic Commerce Protocol with OpenAI and Stripe – abstracts all of that. You get access to the channel without the integration overhead.
Importantly, you retain full ownership of customer relationships and post-purchase data. Your brand stays front and centre. Shopify handles payment processing, tax calculation, fraud detection, and fulfilment – the same infrastructure behind billions of transactions across millions of merchants.
How to Get the Most Out of Agentic Commerce
Turning on Agentic Storefronts is a single admin toggle. Getting genuine value from the channel requires a bit more groundwork. Here is what we recommend:
Step 1 – Audit and Clean Your Product Data
The Shopify Catalog machine-learning layer can do a lot, but it works best when your base data is clean. Ensure every product has a detailed, accurate description, correct GTINs where applicable, well-structured variant options, and complete attribute fields. If your product data is thin or inconsistent, the AI will present your products inconsistently. Fill in alt text on every product image – AI agents read this to understand what an image shows, and it matters as much for agentic discovery as it does for SEO.
Step 2 – Install and Populate the Knowledge Base App
Install the Knowledge Base app from your Shopify admin and work through it methodically. Prioritise:
- Return and refund policies – written in clear, plain language
- Shipping information – including timescales, carriers, and international options
- Brand voice guidelines – how you want your business to sound in AI-generated responses
- Frequently asked questions – review the auto-generated ones Shopify creates and correct or expand them
- Product-specific FAQs for your most important SKUs
This is not a one-time task. Return to the Knowledge Base regularly to review what buyers are asking and update your answers accordingly.
Step 3 – Configure Your Agentic Storefronts Settings
Navigate to Settings > Sales Channels > Agentic Storefronts in your Shopify admin. Choose which AI platforms you want to activate, and decide on a per-channel basis whether to enable direct checkout within the AI interface or route buyers to your storefront. The right choice depends on your brand strategy – embedded checkout maximises conversion speed while storefront completion keeps customers inside your full brand experience.
Step 4 – Add Schema Markup to Your Product Pages
Product schema (JSON-LD markup) helps AI agents understand pricing, availability, and reviews at a structural level. If your theme does not already include it, implement Product schema on your product pages. It benefits both agentic commerce and traditional search simultaneously.
Step 5 – Monitor AI Channel Attribution in Your Admin
Every order originating from an AI channel is attributed back to its source in your Shopify admin. Review this data regularly. It will tell you which platforms are driving sales, what products are being recommended, and how conversion rates compare across AI channels and your direct storefront. Use the search trend data in the Knowledge Base dashboard to spot patterns in customer intent and inform your wider content and product strategy.
A Note on What This Does Not Change
Agentic commerce is a new acquisition channel, not a replacement for your existing ones. Google Shopping, Meta, and your direct storefront are still where the majority of discoverable ecommerce revenue sits in 2026. The right approach is to layer agentic commerce on top of a strong existing catalogue and channel strategy, not to treat it as a pivot.
Merchants who win in this space are not the ones chasing every new AI platform. They are the ones with clean product data, accurate brand information, and a consistent customer experience – fundamentals that benefit every channel, AI-powered or otherwise.
