Your Website Gets Visitors But No Enquiries? Here’s What’s Actually Broken

Traffic isn’t the problem for most small business websites. Trust, speed and weak calls-to-action are. Here’s how to diagnose what’s actually costing you enquiries.

More and more business owners are typing some version of the same question into Google: “why isn’t my website generating leads?” It’s a telling shift. A few years ago, most owners were fixated on traffic. Now a growing number have traffic and still aren’t getting enquiries, which points to a different problem entirely.

If people are landing on your site and leaving without calling, filling in a form, or booking anything, the issue usually isn’t visibility. It’s trust, speed, or a call to action that’s too easy to miss.

The usual suspects

Slow load times. Google measures real-world site speed through three metrics known as Core Web Vitals: Largest Contentful Paint (how fast your main content appears), Interaction to Next Paint (how quickly the page responds when someone taps or clicks), and Cumulative Layout Shift (how much the page jumps around while it loads). Google’s own guidance puts the “good” thresholds at under 2.5 seconds for loading, under 200 milliseconds for responsiveness, and under 0.1 for visual stability. Miss those and it’s not just rankings that suffer. Visitors on a slow site simply give up before they reach your contact details.

Missing or buried calls to action. If someone has to scroll and hunt to find a phone number or a contact form, most won’t bother. This is especially common on sites built around a single generic “Contact Us” page rather than clear next steps on every page that matters.

Weak trust signals. No visible reviews, stock photography instead of real photos of the work or the team, no accreditations or certifications on display. People decide whether to trust a business within seconds of landing on a page, and a site that doesn’t back up its claims quickly loses that benefit of the doubt.

Practical fixes worth prioritising

  • Put your phone number and a contact form above the fold on every key page, not just buried in the footer or a dedicated contact page
  • Add click-to-call links so mobile visitors can ring you in one tap, no copying and pasting a number
  • Build dedicated pages for each service and area you cover, rather than funnelling everyone through one generic page
  • Show real reviews and real photos of your work, not stock imagery
  • Add structured data (schema) for your services and reviews so search engines and AI tools can read them properly

A five-minute self-audit

Before you call anyone in, it’s worth running this check yourself:

  1. Open your site on your phone, not your desktop, since that’s how most visitors will find you
  2. Time how long it takes to load. If it feels slow to you, it’s slow to a stranger with less patience
  3. Try to find your phone number or contact form without scrolling more than once
  4. Ask yourself honestly: would you trust this business based on what’s on the page right now?

If any of those trip you up, that’s usually where the enquiries are being lost, not in your traffic numbers.
